Formula and method
Assumptions and limitations
Use a consistent period and accounting basis. Do not double count expenses. This simplified worksheet does not automatically calculate statutory profit, depreciation, tax or cash flow.
Worked example
Revenue of 10,000 and expenses of 2,500 + 3,500 + 500 gives a surplus of 3,500 and margin of 35%.
What the result means
An accounting surplus is not necessarily cash available: unpaid invoices, debt principal and asset purchases may differ from recorded expenses.
Common questions
Can this show a business loss?
Yes. Expenses above revenue produce a negative surplus.
Is this a complete profit-and-loss statement?
No. It is a compact expense worksheet using the categories you enter.
