Formula and method
Assumptions and limitations
Interest compounds exactly m equally spaced times per year. No fees, tax, balance tiers, introductory periods or withdrawals are modeled. This is rate-conversion math, not a regulated disclosure calculation.
Worked example
A 12% nominal rate compounded monthly has an effective annual rate of approximately 12.6825%.
What the result means
Compare like-for-like rates. A quoted APR that includes fees cannot always be substituted for the nominal rate.
Common questions
Is APY the same as the nominal rate?
They coincide with annual compounding; more frequent positive compounding produces a higher effective rate.
Does this include loan fees?
No. It converts a nominal rate only.
