How to use this calculator

  1. Enter asset depreciable cost, residual value, useful life in whole years, depreciation method.
  2. Choose a display currency, then select Calculate. Results also update after a brief pause while you edit.
  3. Read the result with the assumptions below. Export details or save a second scenario to compare your choices.

Formula and method

Straight line: (cost−residual)/life. Double declining: 2/life × opening book value, switching to remaining straight line when larger. SYD: depreciable base × remaining-life / sum of years.

Assumptions and limitations

Residual cannot exceed cost. Whole years and full-year charges only. This is book mathematics, not a country tax allowance schedule.

Worked example

Cost 10,000, residual 1,000 and five-year straight-line life gives annual depreciation 1,800 and closing book value 1,000.

What the result means

Compare book depreciation methods with a schedule that stops at the entered residual value.

Common questions

How is the calculation performed?

Straight line: (cost−residual)/life. Double declining: 2/life × opening book value, switching to remaining straight line when larger. SYD: depreciable base × remaining-life / sum of years.

What does the model leave out?

Residual cannot exceed cost. Whole years and full-year charges only. This is book mathematics, not a country tax allowance schedule.
