Formula and method
Assumptions and limitations
Avoid counting the same asset twice. Use realistic current asset values and outstanding debt balances. Transaction costs and taxes on liquidation are not deducted.
Worked example
Liquid assets of 20,000 plus other assets of 150,000 less liabilities of 80,000 gives net worth of 90,000.
What the result means
Net worth is a balance at one point in time, not income. Asset values may be uncertain and may not be available as spendable cash.
Common questions
Can net worth be negative?
Yes. It is negative when liabilities exceed assets.
Does the result compare me with a country percentile?
No. No national wealth distribution is assumed.
