How to use this calculator

  1. Enter total cost, selling price.
  2. Choose a display currency, then select Calculate. Results also update after a brief pause while you edit.
  3. Read the result with the assumptions below. Export details or save a second scenario to compare your choices.

Formula and method

Profit = selling price − cost. Margin = profit / selling price × 100. Markup = profit / cost × 100.

Assumptions and limitations

Both amounts must use the same currency and tax basis. Cost includes whichever expenses you enter. Ratios with a zero denominator are shown as undefined, not 0%.

Worked example

Cost of 60 and price of 100 gives profit 40, margin 40% and markup about 66.67%.

What the result means

Margin and markup use different denominators. A loss appears as a negative value. Zero cost can make markup undefined even when profit exists.

Common questions

Are margin and markup interchangeable?

No. Margin uses revenue; markup uses cost.

What happens at zero selling price?

The profit still calculates, but profit margin is undefined.
