How to use this calculator

  1. Enter amount, vat rate (%), amount entered is.
  2. Choose a display currency, then select Calculate. Results also update after a brief pause while you edit.
  3. Read the result with the assumptions below. Export details or save a second scenario to compare your choices.

Formula and method

Adding VAT: gross = net × (1 + j). Removing VAT: net = gross / (1 + j). VAT amount = gross − net.

Assumptions and limitations

A single user-entered rate applies to the full transaction. No country rate, exemption, registration status or recoverability rule is inferred.

Worked example

At an entered 5% rate, 100 before VAT becomes 105. Removing VAT from 105 returns net 100 and VAT 5.

What the result means

Removing tax requires division by 1 plus the rate; subtracting the same percentage from the gross total is incorrect.

Common questions

Is the sample rate official?

No. It is editable example data, not a current country-specific rate.

Can I use this for GST or sales tax?

The arithmetic works for a single percentage, but local taxable-base and compounding rules may differ.
